Depression & Anxiety

Whether a reaction to a specific situation, or an ongoing mood that affects you on a daily basis, feelings of depression and anxiety are common occurrences. Depression and anxiety can affect anyone, child, teen, or adult, at anytime, and cause significant distress, emotional suffering, and impairment that can affect not only the individual, but family and friends as well. And while one can suffer from depression or anxiety alone, it’s common for the two to occur together, making the effects more difficult to manage and harder to resolve. In any given year, estimates are that about 8%, or 2.4 million people in the United States, have symptoms of clinical depression. That number is even higher for anxiety disorders, which is estimated to be about 18%, or 5.4 million people in the United States. About 5 million of these people will have symptoms of both anxiety and depression occurring together.

For depression, some of the symptoms may involve ongoing feelings of sadness, or “the blues”, and in children this can be a chronic irritability or crankiness. Other symptoms include changes in sleeping or eating, fatigue or a chronic feeling of being tired, losing interest in jobs, friends, activities, or pastimes, difficulty concentrating or finishing projects or tasks, and at times can be strong enough to involve thoughts of suicide.

In anxiety disorders, some of the symptoms may include excessive worries, preoccupations with problems, changes in sleeping or eating, problems with concentration or focus, physical symptoms such as tension, headaches, dizziness, or stomach upset, as well as irritability, or inability to make decisions.

Fortunately, depression and anxiety are two of the most treatable mental health conditions. At Wellspring Therapy Center, our staff have a wealth of experience, training, and expertise in helping people address these problems, both individually as well as in their personal relationships. A variety of treatment options are available, including individual therapy, family therapy, hypnosis, and other specific interventions. If you or someone you know is experiencing some of the symptoms listed above, and would like an evaluation to determine if depression and/or anxiety is present, we encourage to call today to make an appointment with one of our staff.
