Eating Disorders

Women and young girls are now living in a society where their bodies define who they are. How often have you looked in the mirror and said, “If I could just lose ten pounds, then I would be happy!” It is estimated that 86% of women and adolescent girls are dissatisfied with their bodies and that this defines their identity. This in part can lead to an eating disorder to include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by the extreme fear of gaining weight. Individuals with this disorder actually perceive their bodies as larger even if they are grossly underweight. They use excessive means to continue to lose weight or to maintain a below normal level.

Bulimia Nervosa is a disorder where the individuals will binge/ purge because of their extreme concern about body weight and shape. They also use excessive means to avoid gaining weight but are able to maintain a body weight at or above a minimally normal level.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder is an “imagined ugliness” where these individuals will spend hours examining perceived flaws. This preoccupation of the perceived flaw leads to significant distress and impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.
